Elements - A Visual Study of Personality
As humans, we all have an inherent connection with the elements of Earth. In this visual study, I explored how I relate most to water - the element that is able to flow and change and adapt as needed. I took the similarities between my personality and the properties of water and molded that into conceptual pieces.
I chose water as my element because of its versatility - because it can be so many things and serve so many different purposes. I relate to that versatility as someone who explores so many different avenues of what it means to be a creative individual - design, studio art, music, etc. I’ve made an active choice to not let myself just be a “_____ designer” or a “_______ artist” - I want to do and be so many different things, and I’ve learned to adapt my skills depending on the project I’m working on.
Water can be soothing, and gentle, or a powerful and destructive force of nature. It can be a river flowing through the woods or a wave crashing onto the shore of the beach. It can be ice, hard and cold. Water is and can be so many different things, and that fact is inspiring to me - it’s something I relate to, and aspire to be all at the same time. These concepts are a visual representation of that, and my response to that feeling.
Design is a visual manifestation of one’s thoughts and ideas, but so often it’s not a direct reflection of who we are as designers. This exercise was incredibly eye-opening - not only a process of creating a final product, but, again, a process of self-exploration.
